The Circus Has Arrived

A collage depicting the circus rolling into town- with an unloading train outside a large blue and white tent. This collage was started in 2017 and took over 700 hours of work to complete.

The Circus has Arrived is made entirely out of brightly colored papers with circus themes and images on the papers. This collage was constructed by assembling three smaller, abstract collages which were initially started to be just layers of paper circles. As they were taking shape, they were looking like a starry night sky- so these small collages were taped together and added to to create the MUCH larger circus original. The tent went through a few changes as it was created, and the resulting blue and white tent has layers of movement created by dimensional fabric layered over the circus themed papers.

The three train cars that appear in the collage each are dropping off their respective parties. Zaza, the fortune teller, was dropped off and is cartwheeling in behind the horses, and the “cold car” is dropping off the troupe’s penguins. Holding up the rear are the very happy and healthy giraffes- whose heads are popping out of train windows. The original vision for this collage was to have a lot of commotion outside of the tent as everyone is arriving, and it was achieved by adding these extra details next to the ticket counters and concession stands.

Each original is scanned by top-of-the-line scanners at Artist’s Resource Group in Northeast Minneapolis. ARG has been specializing in fine art reproductions since opening it’s doors in 2015- and can capture the detail and texture perfectly. The reproductions appear very textured although they are flat- and can be custom sized to fit your space.
